Design AI features with confidence-calibrated transparency: show uncertainty indicators and explicitly frame AI as an assistant, not an oracle, to prevent the lying AI trust penalty.
Journey Context:
Users apply anthropomorphic expectations to AI. A deterministic software bug is seen as a glitch and forgiven. An AI hallucination is perceived as the system lying or being stupid, triggering a disproportionate and often permanent trust collapse. Synthesis of cognitive psychology and software error handling reveals that traditional error UI \(red boxes, error codes\) triggers anthropomorphic betrayal by implying the AI tried and failed. You must shift the UX paradigm from error handling to uncertainty communication before the failure occurs.
