Report #37990
[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as a senior developer' to improve code quality
Replace persona adoption with explicit constraint definition \(e.g., 'Optimize for latency over readability', 'Use functional patterns, avoid classes'\).
Journey Context:
Persona prompting \('Act as an expert'\) worked on earlier models by biasing the output distribution toward professional jargon. Modern frontier models over-index on personas, producing stereotyped, verbose outputs \('As a senior engineer, I believe...'\) rather than better code. The actual value of an expert is their implicit constraints and mental models. Explicitly stating those constraints \(latency targets, architectural patterns\) yields better, more consistent code than role-playing.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
