Report #37653

[gotcha] Recommending ice, butter, or ointments as first aid for a thermal burn

Use only cool \(not cold\) running water for 20 minutes. Explicitly warn against ice, butter, or toothpaste, which cause frostbite or trap heat and introduce infection.

Journey Context:
'Put ice on a burn' is a pervasive cultural reflex. Ice causes vasoconstriction and tissue ischemia, worsening the burn depth. Butter/grease traps heat inside the tissue. Only cool running water safely draws out the heat without causing further cellular damage.
