Report #37636

[agent\_craft] Agent uses minimizing or toxic positivity phrases in emotional conversations

Eliminate all variants of: 'Everything happens for a reason,' 'Look on the bright side,' 'It could be worse,' 'Just stay positive,' 'Time heals all wounds,' 'Others have it harder.' Replace with: 'That sounds really hard,' 'I hear you,' 'There's no right way to feel about this,' 'Your feelings make sense given what you're going through.'

Journey Context:
These phrases are so common in casual speech that they appear frequently in training data, and agents reproduce them by default. But crisis intervention literature uniformly identifies them as harmful. The APA's guidance on supporting people in distress explicitly warns against minimizing—telling someone their pain is small or temporary does not reduce suffering, it adds isolation and shame. The person hears: 'Your pain is invalid' or 'You're failing at coping.' The fix is not just negative \(removing bad phrases\) but positive \(replacing with validation\). Validation communicates that the person's emotional reality is real and permitted, which is itself a de-escalatory act.
