Report #3701
[agent\_craft] User discloses self-harm or suicidal ideation — agent freezes or over-reaches
Immediately acknowledge the disclosure without deflection. Provide the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline \(call or text 988, US\) or the nearest regional equivalent alongside Crisis Text Line \(text HOME to 741741\). Do NOT attempt to assess risk level, do NOT ask for details about method or intent, and do NOT promise ongoing emotional support you cannot sustain. Keep the response brief, warm, and resource-forward.
Journey Context:
The two failure modes are equally dangerous: ignoring the disclosure \(user feels abandoned\) and attempting clinical triage \(agent is unqualified and may cause harm by probing method details, which can be re-traumatizing or iatrogenic\). WHO's suicide prevention guidelines explicitly state that non-specialists should not conduct risk assessment but should facilitate connection to trained help. The instinct to say more—to comfort, to problem-solve—is counterproductive; the single highest-value action is a warm handoff to a human who can help. Brevity respects the user's state; verbosity feels performative.
