Report #36640
[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet or attempting suction to isolate snakebite venom
Never recommend tourniquets, suction devices, or incisions for snakebites. Immobilize the affected limb at heart level and seek immediate emergency care.
Journey Context:
Old first-aid guides and pop culture suggest tourniquets to 'stop the spread.' In reality, tourniquets concentrate the venom locally, causing severe tissue necrosis and increasing the risk of amputation. Venom spreads via lymphatics, and immobilization is vastly more effective and safer than arterial constriction. Agents trained on older data will get users amputated limbs.
