Report #36309
[gotcha] Asking a user in distress to promise or agree not to self-harm \(no-suicide contracts\)
Do not use no-suicide contracts. Instead, focus on collaborative safety planning \(identifying warning signs, coping strategies, and emergency contacts\) and directly asking about suicidal ideation without judgment.
Journey Context:
Historically, clinicians used 'no-suicide contracts.' Research shows they lack efficacy, can create a false sense of security for the agent, and may make the user feel coerced or isolated if they break it. The standard of care shifted to Safety Planning Intervention \(Stanley & Brown\), which is collaborative rather than coercive.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
