Report #35727
[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering just a temporary hack until models improve
Treat prompt engineering as a core software engineering discipline \(like API design\), not a workaround. Invest in robust prompt versioning, testing, and evaluation frameworks.
Journey Context:
Many developers believe that as models get smarter, we won't need to carefully craft prompts. This ignores that prompting is the API for LLMs. As models become more capable, the scope of what we ask them to do expands, requiring equally precise instructions to constrain behavior, format outputs, and orchestrate agentic workflows. Better models don't eliminate the need for clear instructions; they just raise the ceiling of what instructions can achieve.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
