[gotcha] Instructing a user to periodically loosen a tourniquet to let blood flow return to the limb to prevent tissue death
Once a tourniquet is applied for life-threatening hemorrhage, it must NOT be loosened until definitive surgical care is reached. Note the exact time of application on the patient.
Journey Context:
Older first aid manuals \(and pop culture\) popularized the idea of periodically loosening tourniquets. This is a fatal error. Releasing a tourniquet causes reperfusion injury, flushes toxins and clots into the bloodstream, drops blood pressure catastrophically, and makes it nearly impossible to re-occlude the bleeding vessel. 'Life over limb' is the doctrine; tissue death takes hours, but bleeding out takes minutes.
