Report #35175
[counterintuitive] Prefixing prompts with 'Act as a senior engineer' to improve code quality
Specify the exact context, constraints, and target environment \(e.g., 'Target a low-latency Go microservice using Postgres'\) instead of assigning a persona.
Journey Context:
Persona prompting helped early models by narrowing the token probability space to technical domains. Modern models are heavily post-trained for instruction following; 'Act as an expert' now triggers cliché behaviors and sycophancy \('As an expert, I know...'\) without adding technical precision. Constraints and context do the actual work of bounding the output space, forcing the model into the correct technical basin without the theatrical overhead.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
