Report #35075
[gotcha] Can I put a severely hypothermic person in a hot bath or next to a fire to warm them up quickly?
Never use direct heat \(hot water, heating pads, fires\) on a hypothermic person. Warm them slowly with blankets and warm drinks. Rapid rewarming causes vasodilation, drawing cold blood from the extremities to the core, causing a lethal drop in core temperature and cardiac arrhythmias.
Journey Context:
The intuitive response to extreme cold is extreme heat. But in hypothermia, the body has shunted blood to the core to protect organs. Rapid peripheral vasodilation dumps cold, acidic blood from the extremities back into the core, dropping core temperature further \(afterdrop\) and shocking the heart, which is already irritable from cold, into ventricular fibrillation.
