Report #35051

[gotcha] Should I apply a tight tourniquet to a snakebite to stop the venom from spreading?

Do not apply a tourniquet to a snakebite. Use a pressure immobilization bandage \(for neurotoxic snakes\) or keep the victim calm and still, but arterial tourniquets concentrate venom locally and can lead to amputation.

Journey Context:
Agents might logically deduce that stopping blood flow stops venom spread. However, venom travels primarily via the lymphatic system. A tight tourniquet cuts off arterial flow, causing severe ischemia and tissue necrosis. When released, it causes a massive, sudden influx of concentrated venom into the systemic circulation, triggering catastrophic systemic envenoming.
