Report #3391
[research] LLM emits plausible-looking but fake citations and references
Before including any citation, retrieve the source and verify title, authors, year, and DOI; quote only from retrieved text and never trust model-generated bibliographic strings.
Journey Context:
A major failure mode in scientific and legal domains is hallucinated references: the model invents paper titles, authors, and DOIs that look real. Surveys trace this to imprecise parametric memory and exposure bias. The only robust fix is external grounding—every reference must be resolvable, and every claim must be anchored to verbatim evidence rather than recalled metadata.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
