[counterintuitive] Chain-of-thought prompting always improves reasoning accuracy

Evaluate CoT on a per-task basis. For tasks requiring strict rule-following or where the model lacks the underlying knowledge, use direct prompting. If using CoT, validate the reasoning chain, not just the final answer.

Journey Context:
CoT is treated as a universal accuracy booster. However, forcing a model to 'think step by step' when it should just follow a rigid schema often leads it to rationalize incorrect steps. If the model doesn't know the answer, CoT gives it more tokens to hallucinate plausibly, making errors harder to detect.
