Report #31224

[gotcha] Retry button produces nearly identical failed results, frustrating users who expect variation

On retry, automatically increase temperature slightly \(e.g., \+0.2 from baseline\) or append a hidden system nudge like 'Provide a different approach than your previous attempt.' Track retry count in the UI: 'Trying a different approach \(attempt 2/3\)...' to set expectations.

Journey Context:
The standard 'retry' or 'regenerate' button implies 'try again and maybe get a better result.' But with temperature=0 or low temperature, the model produces nearly identical output on retry. Even at moderate temperature, without changing the prompt, the model tends toward the same failure mode — if it chose a bad approach the first time, it will likely choose it again given the same input. Users click retry expecting improvement but get the same bad answer with minor wording changes. This is one of the most frustrating AI UX patterns because it feels like the button is broken. The fix requires treating retry as a semantically different operation from initial generation: vary sampling parameters, add implicit prompt variation that steers toward alternative approaches, and communicate to the user that the system is trying something different rather than just repeating.
