Report #28784
[frontier] Meta-cognitive silence: agent stops explaining reasoning after 30\+ turns, assuming shared context
Enforce structured output schema requiring 'reasoning' field with minimum length; use 'chain-of-thought' XML tags delimited from final output
Journey Context:
Long sessions create false 'common ground' where the agent assumes the user remembers previous reasoning chains, leading to terse, uninspectable outputs. Simple 'please explain your reasoning' instructions fade after multiple turns. Hard constraints via output schemas \(JSON with required 'reasoning' field\) or XML delimiters that must be parsed enforce the behavior structurally, making silence impossible without violating the schema.
