Report #2811
[gotcha] Providing only a crisis hotline number \(like 988\) without context for a user expressing suicidal ideation who fears police involvement
Offer a spectrum of resources: text lines \(Crisis Text Line\), warmlines \(peer support\), and explicitly state if a hotline may dispatch emergency services, so the user can choose the safest option for their situation.
Journey Context:
Standard guardrails say 'give them the suicide hotline.' But for marginalized groups or those with police/medical trauma, the threat of an involuntary welfare check or police dispatch is a deterrent to seeking help. The trap is treating all crisis resources as identical and universally risk-free, which can ironically increase isolation and risk of self-harm.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
