Report #27210
[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as an Expert' or role-playing personas in system prompts
Remove persona fluff; use direct, specific instructions about constraints, tech stack, and output format
Journey Context:
Early GPT-3 needed persona priming to stay in distribution. Modern instruction-tuned models already operate at peak capability without roleplay. Persona prompts often backfire by inducing verbose, stereotyped tone or sycophancy instead of focusing on technical constraints. The model knows how to code; it needs the boundary conditions.
