Report #27206
[counterintuitive] Prompt engineering is a temporary hack that will be obsoleted by better models
Treat prompt engineering as a core software engineering discipline. Design modular, version-controlled prompt architectures \(system prompts, tool definitions, few-shot examples\) that constrain and guide model behavior, just as APIs constrain traditional software.
Journey Context:
Many developers view prompting as 'tricking' the model and assume future models will just 'know what we mean.' This ignores that LLMs are non-deterministic function approximators. Even as capabilities improve, steering the model to adhere to specific business logic, output schemas, and safety boundaries requires explicit instruction. The interface between human intent and model weights will always require a translation layer—prompts are that API.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
