Report #26238

[counterintuitive] Role-playing prompts like 'act as a senior engineer' improve output quality

Replace persona prompts with direct specification of quality criteria, constraints, and standards. Describe what 'good' looks like — specific quality bars, edge cases to handle, formats to follow — not who the model should be.

Journey Context:
In 2023, persona prompts were standard folklore: 'You are a senior Python developer with 20 years of experience...' The theory was that framing activated expert-like behavior patterns. In practice, modern models have fixed capability regardless of persona. Persona prompts waste context tokens and can backfire — 'as a careful engineer' may produce over-verbose, over-cautious code; 'as a creative thinker' may produce unconventional but wrong solutions. Anthropic's own prompting guide recommends describing the task, audience, and standards rather than inventing characters. The shift: from 'who are you?' to 'what does success look like?'
