Report #25253

[agent\_craft] User frustration from preachy, lecturing refusals when asking for restricted code

Refuse concisely without moralizing. Acknowledge the request, state the limitation clearly in one sentence, and immediately offer a permissible alternative or pivot.

Journey Context:
Agents often over-explain safety boundaries, resulting in a paternalistic tone that degrades user experience. Anthropic's Constitutional AI research explicitly trains models to be non-preachy. The journey from 'I cannot do this because it is unethical and dangerous...' to 'I can't generate that, but I can show you how to secure against it' maintains the safety boundary while preserving user autonomy and productivity. The tradeoff is brevity vs. perceived safety thoroughness, but brevity wins for agent UX.
