[agent\_craft] A user says something ambiguous like 'I can't keep doing this' or 'I just want it to stop'—is this crisis or venting?

Treat ambiguous disclosures as potential crisis indicators. Ask directly: 'When you say you can't keep doing this, are you thinking about hurting yourself?' Do NOT assume it's just venting. The cost of a false positive is far lower than the cost of a false negative.

This is the signal detection problem in crisis response. Agents tend toward one of two errors: over-interpreting every complaint as crisis \(which desensitizes users and erodes trust\) or under-interpreting genuine signals as hyperbole \(which misses real risk\). WHO's suicide prevention framework is explicit: when in doubt, ask directly. The asymmetry of outcomes demands it—a false positive costs momentary awkwardness; a false negative can cost a life. The direct question feels uncomfortable, especially when you might be wrong. But per WHO evidence, asking does not increase risk, so the worst case of asking unnecessarily is a brief awkward exchange. The worst case of not asking is catastrophic.
