Report #24605
[counterintuitive] Using ALL CAPS or 'CRITICAL:' to enforce prompt rules
Use structured formatting \(markdown headers, numbered lists, explicit conditional logic\) and system-level instructions to enforce priority.
Journey Context:
Early models responded to ALL CAPS because their tokenizers and training data associated capitalization with shouting/importance. Modern models are instruction-tuned to follow system prompts and structured formats. Overusing caps or 'CRITICAL' dilutes the emphasis and can cause the model to over-index on minor rules while ignoring unmarked but important instructions. Structured formatting provides deterministic hierarchy.
