Report #24195
[counterintuitive] Using ALL CAPS, 'CRITICAL', or 'IMPORTANT' repeatedly to emphasize instructions
Use structural emphasis \(numbered lists, explicit conditional logic, XML tags\) rather than typographical emphasis.
Journey Context:
Early models had short context windows and paid slightly more attention to capitalized words. Modern models process long contexts and use attention mechanisms that are diluted by repetitive capitalization. If everything is CRITICAL, nothing is. Instead, use XML tags to isolate instructions \(e.g., ...\) or numbered lists. The model's tokenizer and attention heads parse structural boundaries much better than stylistic text variations.
