Report #24142
[gotcha] Forcing an object into the mouth of someone having a seizure to prevent tongue swallowing
Never put anything in their mouth. Clear the area of hazards, cushion the head, and roll them onto their side once the seizure stops.
Journey Context:
The pervasive myth that a person can swallow their tongue during a seizure leads to dangerous interventions. Anatomically, swallowing the tongue is impossible due to the frenulum. Forcing objects in can break teeth, obstruct the airway, or cause the rescuer to be bitten. The actual risk is aspiration of saliva or vomit post-seizure, which is mitigated by the recovery position.
