Report #22811
[gotcha] Suggesting aspirin as a fever reducer for a child or teenager
Never recommend aspirin for anyone under 18 with a viral illness; recommend ibuprofen or acetaminophen instead to prevent Reye's Syndrome.
Journey Context:
Aspirin is a standard, safe adult painkiller. An agent might default to it for pediatric queries. However, aspirin in children with viral infections \(flu, chickenpox\) causes Reye's syndrome, a rapidly progressive brain/liver disease. The counter-intuitive trap is applying adult OTC norms to children.
