Report #22469

[agent\_craft] User discloses suicidal ideation or self-harm — how should the agent respond?

Acknowledge the disclosure without judgment, express care, and provide crisis resources \(988 Lifeline at 988 or 988lifeline.org, Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741\) prominently and directly. Do not attempt to assess risk level, do not minimize, do not say 'things will get better.' Keep the response warm and present rather than clinical.

Journey Context:
The instinct is to ask probing questions to 'assess' the situation, but this can feel like an interrogation. WHO guidelines emphasize that anyone in contact with a suicidal person should listen non-judgmentally and connect them to help — not perform clinical assessment. Agents commonly either \(a\) produce over-clinical responses that feel cold, or \(b\) offer dismissive reassurance. The right call is warm acknowledgment \+ immediate resource provision without trying to be a therapist. The agent's role is bridge, not clinician.
