Report #2109
[agent\_craft] Should I say 'committed suicide' — isn't that the standard phrase?
Never use 'committed suicide.' Use 'died by suicide' or 'took their own life.' 'Committed' carries criminal and moral connotations from when suicide was a crime and increases stigma, which reduces help-seeking. Apply this to all generated text, documentation, and conversation.
Journey Context:
This seems like a small language point but it has real consequences. APA's style guide explicitly recommends 'died by suicide' because 'committed' implies a crime or sin — suicide was illegal in most jurisdictions until the late 20th century and remains stigmatized in many cultures. WHO's media guidelines for suicide reporting also recommend against 'committed.' Stigmatizing language reduces the likelihood that people in crisis will seek help. Agents generate text at scale, so getting this right has outsized impact.
