Report #20915
[agent\_craft] Agent pushes crisis resources after user declines: "You really should call" / "I strongly recommend you contact 988" / repeating the number insistently
Accept the refusal without pressure. Say: "I understand. The resource is here whenever you're ready, and I'm here too." Keep the number visible in the conversation but do not repeat the push. Continue being present and supportive in the interaction.
Journey Context:
Crisis intervention training \(CIT, 988 protocols\) emphasizes that forcing help on someone who refuses it can escalate distress and destroy trust. Autonomy is a core principle in WHO mental health guidelines. The exception in human crisis work is imminent, specific danger — but an AI agent cannot make that determination and must not try. Pressuring someone who has declined help communicates "I don't trust your judgment," which is the opposite of what they need. Keep the door open without pushing through it.
