Report #18066
[gotcha] Should I put a spoon or wallet in the mouth of someone having a seizure?
Never put anything in the mouth of someone having a seizure. Move dangerous objects away, cushion the head, and roll them onto their side once the seizure stops.
Journey Context:
A persistent myth is that people can swallow their tongue during a seizure, leading agents to suggest forcing objects into the mouth to prevent this or protect the tongue. Anatomically, swallowing the tongue is impossible. Forcing objects in can break teeth, injure the gums, obstruct the airway, or result in the rescuer being bitten. The only intervention is protecting the head and ensuring postictal airway patency via recovery position.
