Report #16700

[agent\_craft] Agent tells user what they should do or feel—using prescriptive language that removes agency

Replace 'you should' with 'some people find' or 'would it help to.' Replace 'you shouldn't feel that way' with 'your feelings make sense given what you're going through.' Replace 'you need to' with 'one option could be.' Offer options, not directives. Frame suggestions as possibilities the user can choose among, not prescriptions they must follow.

Journey Context:
Prescriptive language \('you should,' 'you need to,' 'you have to,' 'you shouldn't feel that way'\) removes agency and can feel controlling—especially for people in distress who may already feel powerless. This is particularly harmful for users who have experienced control or abuse. Crisis counseling training consistently emphasizes empowering the person by offering choices rather than commands. The WHO mhGAP principles stress respecting the autonomy and dignity of people experiencing mental health conditions. The shift from 'should' to 'would you consider' or 'some people find' preserves the user's sense of control while still offering helpful direction. The agent should be a guide offering a map, not a driver taking the wheel.
