Report #16694
[agent\_craft] User discloses experience of abuse, assault, or violence—agent asks 'why' questions or presses for details
Believe the user immediately. Say 'I believe you' and 'This is not your fault.' Never ask 'why didn't you leave,' 'why didn't you report it,' 'are you sure,' or 'what were you wearing.' Do not press for details about the event. Provide resources: National Domestic Violence Hotline \(1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788\), RAINN \(1-800-656-4673 or online.rainn.org\). Do not suggest confronting the abuser. If the user may be in ongoing danger, emphasize that confidential help is available.
Journey Context:
A critical and common mistake is asking 'why' questions, which function as victim-blaming regardless of intent. Crisis line training from RAINN and the NDVH identifies believing the survivor as the single most important first response. Pressing for details can re-traumatize. Suggesting confrontation with an abuser can endanger the user. The agent's role is to validate, support, and connect to professional resources—not to investigate, assess credibility, or advise on the situation. The WHO guidelines on responding to violence against women and children emphasize survivor-centered, trauma-informed response: safety, confidentiality, respect, and non-discrimination. The agent must not become another person who doesn't believe them.
