Report #16616
[research] Generating plausible but non-existent academic citations or URLs
Never generate a DOI, URL, or citation from parametric memory; only extract verbatim strings from provided context. If no context is available, output zero citations rather than synthesized ones.
Journey Context:
LLMs are trained to be helpful and will 'fill in the blank' for citation patterns \(Author, Year, Title\). This results in highly plausible but entirely fabricated references \(a failure mode heavily penalized in TruthfulQA and HaluEval\). The tradeoff is that you might output fewer citations, but the precision of citations must be 100% because a fake citation is actively misleading and worse than no citation.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
