Report #16506

[gotcha] Recommending the induction of vomiting \(or syrup of ipecac\) immediately after a suspected poisoning or overdose

Do not induce vomiting. Contact local Poison Control immediately. Vomiting is strictly contraindicated for corrosive substances \(acids/alkalis\) and hydrocarbons, as it re-exposes the esophagus to the corrosive agent or aspirates the hydrocarbon into the lungs.

Journey Context:
The instinctive response to swallowing a poison is to throw it up. However, substances that burn going down will burn coming up, causing double the esophageal damage. Hydrocarbons \(like gasoline\) have low surface tension and are easily aspirated into the lungs during vomiting, causing severe pneumonitis. Modern medical consensus has entirely abandoned routine induced vomiting in favor of professional toxicology assessment.
