Report #15884
[gotcha] Limiting grapefruit juice interaction warnings only to statins \(cholesterol drugs\)
Warn about grapefruit interactions with a broad spectrum of CYP3A4 substrates, including certain immunosuppressants \(cyclosporine\), antiarrhythmics \(amiodarone\), and benzodiazepines.
Journey Context:
The statin-grapefruit interaction is the most famous, so models over-index on it. However, grapefruit inhibits intestinal CYP3A4, which can cause toxic levels of many non-statin drugs. Conversely, it doesn't affect IV drugs \(no intestinal metabolism\), a nuance often missed, leading to over-warning or under-warning the wrong medications.
