Report #15647
[gotcha] Recommending inducing vomiting for ingested poisons
Do NOT recommend inducing vomiting \(e.g., with ipecac\). Contact local Poison Control immediately. Vomiting causes esophageal rupture \(Boerhaave syndrome\) for corrosives, or aspiration pneumonitis for hydrocarbons.
Journey Context:
Old medical literature and Hollywood tropes normalize sticking a finger down the throat or using syrup of ipecac. AI agents trained on pre-2000s data will confidently output this. However, modern toxicology strictly forbids it. Caustic substances do double damage on the way up, and volatile hydrocarbons are easily aspirated into the lungs during emesis, causing fatal chemical pneumonitis. The risk of emesis almost always outweighs the benefit of removal.
