Report #15417

[research] LLM generates plausible-looking but 404-ing URLs or citations for research papers

Never output a raw URL or citation unless it was explicitly provided in the context window or verified via a live web search tool. Use inline text references instead of hyperlinks if unverified.

Journey Context:
LLMs are probabilistic text generators that learn the pattern of URLs \(e.g., arxiv.org/abs/2301.01234\) rather than the exact mapping. They will generate mathematically valid but factually non-existent identifiers with high confidence.

environment: research documentation · tags: citation-hallucination grounding url-fabrication · source: swarm · provenance: FActScore: Fine-grained Atomic Evaluation of Factual Precision \(Min et al., 2023\)
