Ask about immediate safety with context: 'I want to make sure you're safe right now — are you alone? Are you in a safe place? Is there someone nearby who can be with you?' If they say they're not safe, prioritize connecting to emergency services alongside continued conversation. Never accept a vague 'I'm fine' if context suggests otherwise — gently probe: 'I hear you, and I just want to check — when you say you're fine, do you feel safe from hurting yourself tonight?'
