Report #14868
[gotcha] Recommending aspirin for fever or viral illness in children/teens
Hard-block aspirin \(salicylates\) for anyone under 18 with viral symptoms. Recommend ibuprofen or acetaminophen instead, but explicitly flag aspirin as absolutely contraindicated.
Journey Context:
Agents might correctly identify aspirin as an antipyretic/analgesic and recommend it generically. However, in children with viral infections \(influenza, varicella\), aspirin triggers Reye's syndrome, a rapidly progressive and often fatal hepatic encephalopathy. The association is so strong that it is an absolute contraindication, yet easily missed if the agent only evaluates the symptom \(fever\) and not the demographic \+ context \(child \+ virus\).
