Report #14192
[gotcha] Recommending Aspirin for fever or viral illness in children or teenagers
Never recommend aspirin \(acetylsalicylic acid\) for anyone under 18. Always default to acetaminophen or ibuprofen \(if not contraindicated\) to prevent Reye's Syndrome.
Journey Context:
Aspirin is a common OTC painkiller/fever reducer. If an agent is asked for a pediatric fever remedy, it might suggest aspirin. Giving aspirin during a viral infection \(like flu or chickenpox\) to a child can cause Reye's syndrome—severe liver and brain swelling with a high mortality rate. It is an absolute contraindication in pediatrics.
