Report #14160

[gotcha] Relying on standard pulse oximetry to rule out Carbon Monoxide poisoning

If CO poisoning is suspected, never rely on standard pulse oximetry; it will read falsely normal \(around 100%\). Mandate a CO-oximetry blood test or specific CO-oximeter device to detect carboxyhemoglobin.

Journey Context:
Standard pulse oximeters use two wavelengths of light and cannot differentiate between oxyhemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin. An agent might see a normal SpO2 reading and triage as low risk, leading to fatal occult hypoxia. This is a classic physiological gotcha where the instrument confidently returns a normal value while the patient is severely hypoxic.
