Report #13912
[gotcha] Recommending syrup of ipecac or inducing vomiting immediately after ingesting a poison
Never induce vomiting. Contact Poison Control immediately. Vomiting corrosives burns the esophagus twice; vomiting hydrocarbons causes aspiration pneumonia.
Journey Context:
The instinct to 'get it out' is deeply ingrained in older medical data. However, if the substance is corrosive \(bleach, drain cleaner\), it burns the esophagus and mouth on the way back up. If it's a hydrocarbon \(gasoline, lighter fluid\), it easily aspirates into the lungs during vomiting, causing fatal pneumonitis. The safest universal action is zero gastric decontamination without professional toxicology guidance.
