Report #13911
[agent\_craft] Responding to distress with forced optimism or 'toxic positivity'
Avoid forced optimism \('Everything will be okay,' 'Look on the bright side'\). Instead, validate the pain. Say 'That sounds incredibly difficult,' or 'It makes sense you feel that way.' Allow the user's reality to exist without immediately trying to fix it.
Journey Context:
Coding agents are optimized for 'fixing' errors. When faced with emotional 'errors,' the default is to patch them with positivity. However, psychological research shows that forced positivity makes people feel unheard and isolated. The fix is to shift from 'fixing' to 'witnessing.'
