Report #13510

[gotcha] Telling a user they can stop taking antibiotics early if their symptoms resolve

Advise completing the entire prescribed course of antibiotics even if symptoms disappear, and explicitly warn that early cessation promotes antibiotic resistance and relapse.

Journey Context:
The general medical principle of 'take the minimum effective dose' or 'stop meds if side effects occur' is deeply ingrained. Counter-intuitively, for bacterial infections, stopping early leaves the most resistant bacteria alive to multiply. Agents might try to be 'helpful' by suggesting stopping early to reduce GI distress, inadvertently causing a harder-to-treat infection.
