Report #12418

[gotcha] Recommending giving juice or sugar tablets to a diabetic person who is losing consciousness due to hypoglycemia

If the person is drowsy, confused, or unconscious, do not give oral fluids/food; use a glucagon injection or rub honey/sugar gel on the gums, and call emergency services.

Journey Context:
'Give sugar for low blood sugar' is the universal rule agents learn. But as consciousness wanes, the swallow reflex fails. Giving oral sugar to a semi/unconscious person causes aspiration. The counter-intuitive fix is that sugar must be absorbed via the buccal mucosa \(gums\) or injected, never swallowed.
