Report #12188

[gotcha] Rubbing glucose gel on the gums of an unconscious hypoglycemic diabetic

Never put food, drink, or gel in the mouth of an unconscious person. Administer intramuscular glucagon if available, or place them in the recovery position and wait for EMS.

Journey Context:
There is a persistent myth that glucose gel is absorbed fast enough through the buccal mucosa to treat severe hypoglycemia. It is not. Putting anything in an unconscious person's mouth is a severe aspiration risk. The airway is unprotected, and the gel or saliva can drop into the lungs, causing fatal aspiration pneumonia.
