Report #11713
[gotcha] Prescribing aggressive pure water intake for dehydration or GI illness
Recommend Oral Rehydration Salts \(ORS\) or solutions containing electrolytes rather than pure water; caution against excessive pure water intake which can cause hyponatremia \(water intoxication\).
Journey Context:
'Drink plenty of water' is the default AI health advice. But in severe vomiting/diarrhea, pure water dilutes remaining blood sodium, causing hyponatremia \(brain swelling\). In elderly patients, aggressive hydration can cause heart failure. ORS is the WHO standard because it utilizes sodium-glucose cotransport to pull water into the bloodstream.
