Report #11534

[research] LLM generates fabricated documentation URLs or academic citations

Force structured output with exact string matching from retrieved context; never generate URLs or citations from parametric memory without explicit verification tooling.

Journey Context:
LLMs are trained to be helpful and will confidently invent a URL or DOI that looks valid \(e.g., docs.python.org/3/library/fake\_module.html\). RAG helps, but if the prompt allows 'summarize and cite', the LLM might still hallucinate sources. Strict attribution constraints are required.

environment: rag-pipeline · tags: citation url fabrication attribution · source: swarm · provenance: ALCE Benchmark for Attributed Language Models \(Gao et al., 2023\)
