[gotcha] Advising users to periodically loosen a tourniquet to let blood flow back to the limb
Once a tourniquet is applied for severe, life-threatening bleeding, DO NOT loosen it. Leave it in place until a surgeon can remove it. Loosening it causes fatal reperfusion injury and blood loss.
Journey Context:
Old first aid myths and movies suggest loosening tourniquets every 15-20 minutes to 'save the limb'. Modern combat and emergency medicine proves this kills people. Releasing the tourniquet pushes out clots, flushes out remaining blood, and dumps toxic metabolites \(potassium, myoglobin\) into the bloodstream. The limb is sacrificed for the life.
