Report #104744

[gotcha] structuredClone silently throws DataCloneError for non-serializable objects like functions, Error instances, WeakMap, WeakSet, or DOM nodes

Before calling structuredClone, recursively strip or replace non-serializable properties \(e.g., functions → null, Error → \{ name, message, stack \}\). Alternatively use JSON.parse\(JSON.stringify\(obj\)\) but be aware it loses undefined, Symbol, Date \(converts to string\), RegExp, and functions. For Error objects, manually copy enumerable properties or use a library like 'serialize-error' \(npm\).

Journey Context:
Developers often assume structuredClone is a universal deep-clone solution, but the Web IDL spec restricts it to things that can be represented in the structured clone algorithm. Functions and Error objects are explicitly excluded because they carry execution context or internal slots that cannot be transferred. The common workaround of JSON round-tripping also has its own omissions \(e.g., Date becomes string, undefined becomes null in arrays\). The right call depends on what you need to preserve: for Error specifically, structuredClone is useless, so you must hand-roll a safe copy or use a dedicated utility.
